Video Pick of The Week!

Monte Piwo

This week’s Video pick is Monte Piwo by TPO aka Piero Al-khal,  a Haitian American  artist born in Queens, New York.  The song “Monte Piwo”, means to “Rise Higher” or “Go Higher”.  The skit in the video portrays a Dominican father who rejects his daughter’s relationship simply because her boyfriend is Haitian.  The dad seems to have a change of heart when he notices that the boyfriend is well off and doesn’t fit his stereotype.   However, his acceptance seems to be too late…

TPO’s new album Viv Ayiti is now  available in stores and on Itunes!

Aventuras Con Sabor!

Obini Bata

Obini_Bata“Obini Bata is the first all female folkloric drumming ensemble in Cuba. Obini is the Yoruban word for Woman.  Bata drumming is the oldest drum tradition of Cuba. Obini Bata was formed in 1993 by Director Eva Despaigne and other female members of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba.  In Cuba the Bata are traditionally played only by men, but Obini Bata have challenged the taboo by becoming the first all-female bata drumming ensemble in Cuba.In addition to playing Bata, all members of the group play a variety of Cuban drums and percussion, as well as singing and dancing. To create a complete performance, encompassing all aspects of the ancient tradition they represent.” Text source  (photo Source)

A couple of years ago I visited Cuba with Metamovements and participated in an educational exchange with Obini Bata! Below are a couple of videos of my visit with the group. To learn more about their legal travel program visit their website www.voyagegtocuba.com , and mention that I sent you!

Oshun by Obini Bata

About Oshun: “Oshun (also spelled Ochún, Oṣun or Oxum) is the youngest of the orishas and probably the most popular in Santeria… She is the orisha of love, beauty, femininity and sensuality which leads many people to compare her to Venus or Aphrodite. Such a comparison is short-sighted, however, for Oshun is vast and powerful; she is actually the full breadth of womanhood. From the young, enthusiastic coquette that flirts with boys to the old matriarch that sits in a rocking chair, hard-of-hearing, reminiscing of her youth, Oshun contains every woman’s story within her patakis. She makes her residence in the rivers of the world. Hers is the power of sweetness in life, and all of the things that make life worth living.” Text Source

Oya by Obini Bata

About Oya: “Oyá (also Ollá, Yansa or Yansán) is a fierce and powerful female warrior orisha in Santeria. She is the owner of the marketplace, and keeps the gates of the cemetery. She is the force of change in nature and in life. She wields lightning and rides the winds into battle, often fighting with her machetes side-by-side with her favorite lover, Changó. Oyá raises the armies of the dead as her soldiers and is said to use the tornado as her weapon. Oyá’s aché is fierce, tumultuous, changing and protective” Text Source

“Hey Pat,

Effective immediately…. For personal reasons i’m gonna step away from the stage as carimi main singer… This is not really something i wish to go into details with the fans and the media right now, it’s imperative that I get some time off now…  Management is aware and will probably follow w a statement that clarifies the direction of the band moving foward…
Our loyal fans might be disappointed but this was not an easy decision specially when I have been reliable for the pass 14 years. I hope you guys understand the sacrifice that comes w being a musician specially in the haitian music industry..

Hope to see you guys soon…

Gob Bless
Mickael Guirand

PS: Sorry bro to drop it on you like that.. its been a pleasure…” Text source , Photo Source

According to Ayitibiyografi this decision may not be final. “My source also revealed that this decision may be in fact a personal one for Mike. I was told that the singer never got over some of the family issues that he’s had in the past because of his commitment to Carimi.” Text Source

Statement from Carimi’s Manager

According to Ayitibiography,  Carimi’s Manager, Fito Farinen, made the following statement in response to Mickael Guirand’s decision to leave the band: “I know that many of our fans and friends might be concerned about Carimi, right now but our focus is on supporting Mickael and his decision to take a break for now.  We understand that Mickael needs a break and as a family we are here to support him. Nothing is indefinite and nothing is final right now. As a team we are taking a moment to regroup and as far as our fans are concerned we will be coming out with more details soon.  Thank you for the love you show us, and we ask that you continue to support us.”

The Real Reason

According to hatianbeatz.com the real reason behind Mickael’s departure is due to his recent divorce and his replacement will be Mikaben.

“In Carimi’s 14 years of existence both Richard Cave and Carlo Vieux have missed a few gigs with the band, the same cannot be said about Mickael Guirand, he has yet to miss a gig since his debut with the band 14 years. This streak is about to come to an end, as Mickael Guirand announced on Kompamagazine this morning that he was leaving Carimi and the music scene for the moment. Personal reason is cited as the main cause for this sudden decision.

For the past few years, Mickael Guirand has been going through a very tough divorce, that according to many who is close to the singer coupled with a few other personal issues within the band, have taken a big toll on him personally. Mickael is a very private person, and barely share his misery with anyone, including his fellow partners, both Richard and Carlo. As a matter of fact, Mickael and Carlo have not been in speaking terms form months now. His closest friend in the band is the manager Fito, whom he spent many hours on the phone with yesterday before making a public statement this morning. Fito tried his best to convince Mickael to postpone this decision and that the band is willing to do anything to be on his side and help him go through this crisis. But it seems that Mickael’s decision was already written in stone. Early this moment he sent a note to Kompamagazine that stunned the whole HMI…” Effective immediately…. For personal reasons I’m gonna step away from the stage as Carimi” main singer”, he wrote, “This is not really something I wish to go into details with the fans and the media right now, it’s imperative that I get some time off now” explained Mickael.

Mickael urged Fito to make the announcement for him, but Fito refused to do so “he knows that I will never agree to do that” stated Fito, “however, the whole band is with Mickael and will support him on his decision, and will support him in whatever he wishes us to do during this difficult moment” continued Fito.

Even though this decision may have been a surprised for the HMI world, it was not for people who are close to the band. The band has been expecting such announcement, even though they did not know how soon, but they knew it was coming. The band even had put together a plan B scenario just in case. According to our sources, Mika Ben, will immediately become the front man of the band, on a temporary basis, just in case, Mickael decides to come back. Mickael Guirand will remain part owner of the band, and will get paid accordingly, the same source told HB. Mika Ben will make his first appearance with the band when they perform at Rutgers University later this week. He will make his first appearance in New York with the band, at Haitianbeatz’ 7th Anniversary party on December 12th in Lynbrook Long Island.

Mickael Guirand is one of the most devoted member of Carimi, he controls all of Carimi’s social media, and has done a fantastic job in doing so. The band will miss a big piece of the puzzle that makes Carimi what it is today. The “Mi” in CaRiMi represents more than two letters, he’s one of the backbone of the band. Very passionate, and willing to throw a few punch when he feels that his band has been wrongfully targeted, either by promoters, the media or anyone else. He’s very respectful to his fans or his audience, a man of his words, never late for an event, always give his 100% where there are 100 people or 1000 people in attendance. Mickael Guirand deserves to take some time off if he wishes to, he has earned this extended vacation. We should all rally behind him and hope that one day he will come back to entertain us once again.

To be continued…
